The Jerk Premise

There is the idea being expressed that good things can be lost as easily as gained, the tagline for the film is ‘From rags to riches... to rags’. With the acquiring then quite swift loss of Navin’s money, which coupled with the dramatic structure of his personality changes throughout and that of his girl leaving, preach to the audience, don’t take things for granted or be so short sighted with money.

Another underpinning idea of the film I think is quite similar in that it shows Navin to have been completely brainwashed by all the cash, and with the all too familiar storyline of ‘disgruntled wife leaves because the money has changed the man she one fell in love with’. With Navin eventually being re-united with all the non-superficial things he loves in the end, minus the money, it gives an ‘every-cloud..’ ending, Navin got another chance, and learns to appreciate the free things in life, such as family and friends etc...
